Instructor information :

Area of Study :

1) To educate students nerve supply for all maxillary and mandibular teeth. 2) To educate students dental pain pathway and methods of pain control. 3) To educate students pharmacology of local anesthetics and components of local anesthetic carpule. 4) To educate and train students in administering local anesthesia for the different dental and oral surgery procedures. 5) To educate students local and systemic complications of local anesthesia and their management. 6) Introduce the student to the basic principles and techniques of closed exodontia. 7) Enable the student to have intellectual and clinical skills in closed exodontias and minor oral surgical procedures based on an outpatient population. 8) Educate student in the basic principles of sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis and infection control of local anesthesia 9) Allow students to gain clinical experience in the physical examination of patients requiring minor oral surgery procedures 10) Educate students on medico-legal implications, appropriate use of professional ethics, attitudes, communication and problem solving skills

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Describe the physiologic mechanisms of pain modulation and pain control
2- Identify the mechanism of action of local anesthetics
3- Recognize the different local anesthetic solutions and vasoconstrictors
4- Describe the different local anesthetic techniques
5- Recognize the local and systemic complications of local anesthesia
6- Identify and list the armentarium needed for minor oral surgery procedures

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Conceder and recommended the appropriate referral of patients for specialist advice or treatment.
2- Consider appropriately patients'rights, particularly with regard to confidentiality and valid consent, and of patients'obligations.
3- Interpret clinical laboratory data and special investigations to help formulate a proper diagnosis and treatment plan

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Correctly perform an appropriate physical examination including intraoral and head and neck examination
2- Properly prepare the armentarium and the treatment environment for minor oral surgery procedures
3- Properly collect and record personal data, medical history and vital signs
4- Properly execute infection control and asepsis standards
5- Properly perform pre-anesthetic evaluation / premedication
6- Properly administer infiltration and block local anesthesia
