Instructor information :

Area of Study :

1)- To educate and train students in administering local anesthesia for the different dental and oral surgery procedures 2)- Introduce the student to the basic principles and techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery 3)- Enable the student to have intellectual and clinical skills in basic, complicated exodontias and minor oral surgical procedures based on an outpatient population. 4)- Educate the student in the basic principles of sterilization,disinfection and antisepsis. 5)- Allow students to gain clinical experience in the physical examination of patients requiring minor oral surgery procedures 6)- Educate the students in basic life support and management of medical emergencies in the dental office 7)- To educate the students in the principles of conscious sedation and general anesthesia 8)- Familiarize the student with the procedures most commonly provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons 9)- Educate students on medico-legal implications, appropriate use of professional ethics, attitudes, communication and problem solving skills

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Describe the clinical signs and symptoms of salivary gland disease & Describe the medical and surgical treatment of the various salivary gland diseases
2- Identify disorders of the oral mucosa, including malignant and potentially malignant lesions and discuss the principles of cancer therapy
3- Recognize the different temporomandibular joint disorders & Describe the surgical management of temporomandibular joint disorders
4- Identify the indications and contra-indications for general anesthesia . Describe the stage and techniques of general anesthesia for both outpatient and inpatient surgery

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Conceder and recommended the appropriate referral of patients for specialist advice or treatment.
2- Interpret clinical laboratory data and special investigations to help formulate a proper diagnosis and treatment plan
3- Relate the advantages and disadvantages of relevant treatment plans with patients
4- Communicate and appraise clinical problems and treatment plans with other specialties involved in the treatment of patients

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Properly administer infiltration and block local anesthesia
2- Properly perform exodontia and basic minor oral surgery procedures including proper suturing technique
3- Write appropriate prescription of drugs and monitor their effectiveness and safety particularly in the management of fear and anxiety
4- Properly manage medical emergencies that may arise in the outpatient clinic
5- Describe biopsy procedures as incorporated into general practice
6- Properly inspect and examine TMJ disorder patients
