Area of Study :

a) Foster knowledge that governs the principles of innate and acquired immune defense mechanisms. b) Provide opportunities for reviewing the macro- and microanatomy of the periodontium, histopathology, etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. c) Expand students’ analytical skills relative to clinical signs and symptoms and radiographic features of periodontal diseases

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Identify the mechanism of innate and acquired immune mechanisms and related immune cells.
2- State the different complement pathways and its role in immunity and inflammation
3- Recall the macro- and microanatomy of the periodontium
4- Define different diseases affecting the periodontium
5- Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms and radiographic features of plaque induced gingivitis and chronic periodontitis.
6- State the etiology and local predisposing factors of the periodontal diseases.
7- Describe the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases.

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Compare between innate and acquired immune responses.
2- Differentiate between different types of lymphocytes, subtypes of types T lymphocytes and different functions of antibodies
3- Recognize different periodontal diseases.
4- Differentiate between the different histopathological stages of gingivitis
5- Relate the clinical and radiographic features to reach a proper diagnosis

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Fill a periodontal chart
2- Diagnose common gingival and periodontal diseases.
3- Apply the principles of periodontal instrumentation
4- Perform scaling and root planing efficiently.
5- Select the appropriate technique and methods for mechanical plaque control.
6- Modify the plan for chemical plaque control according to observed signs and symptoms
7- Apply infection control guidelines for all clinical procedures

d. General and Transferable Skills:

1- Maintain good relationship with his/her colleagues, instructors, and professors.
2- Respect the patient needs and demands.
