Area of Study :

This course is designed to introduce the student to different techniques in maxillofacial prosthodontics. The student will understand the management of maxillary defects either congenital or acquired and the uses and construction of different stents and splints.

Course outcomes:

a. Knowledge and Understanding:

1- Recognize different congenital and acquired defects, speech appliance and surgical obturators
2- Understand the functions of oral stents and splints, and how they are constructed.
3- - Enumerate the sequence of treatment procedures of maxillofacial prostheses.
4- Recognize the hazards of ionizing radiation and, management of irradiated patients and the need for radiation stents

b. Intellectual Skills:

1- Interpret and manage congenital and acquired maxillary defects.
2- Formulate appropriate treatment plan for patients with maxillofacial defects
3- Select the suitability of different stents and splints, in different clinical situations.

c. Professional and Practical Skills:

1- Perform clinical steps in the construction of complete and partial dentures
2- Effectively diagnosis and plan the appropriate treatment sequences for a patient with congenital and acquired defects
3- Demonstrate understanding of stents, splints and radiotherapy prosthesis

d. General and Transferable Skills:

1- Demonstrate appropriate professional attitudes and behavior in dealing with patients
2- Differentiate between different treatment plans for different clinical situations
