  • Define different pathological conditions
  • Describe the etiology of oral and oral-related disorders
  • Explain the biological processes contributing to oral pathological conditions
  • Recognize predisposing factors that require intervention in order to promote oral health
  • Identify the clinical signs and symptoms suggestive of oral lesions
  • Apply knowledge of the etiology and the processes of oral diseases in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Describe the clinical picture, laboratory findings, and microscopic picture of the common oral lesions
  • Recognize the mechanisms of responses to injuries including trauma and disease
  • Recognize the pathogenesis of genetic and immunologic diseases which are particularly relevant to the practice of dentistry

Intellectual skills:

  • Differentiate between the most important oral lesions using the light microscope
  • Distinguish between the microscopic features of the potentially malignant and frankly malignant lesions of the oral mucosa

Professional and practical skills:

  • Correct use of the light microscope
  • Understand the importance of the procedures for submitting specimens for laboratory diagnosis and demonstrate the ability to interpret diagnostic reports
  • Understand the technical steps for preparation of microscopic slides and the main histopathological stains
  • Diagnose different dental and oral pathological conditions, depending on clinical, radiographic, and microscopic features
