Future University in Egypt’s Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine (FODM) continues to expand opportunities for students to gain meaningful international clinical exposure and experience global approaches to dental education and patient care. From 11 to 26 April 2026, senior students and interns from FODM participated in a two-week clinical shadowing experience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill), one of the leading institutions in dental education and clinical practice. The experience offered students an opportunity to observe advanced dental practices in a different academic and clinical environment, while gaining a broader understanding of how diagnosis, treatment planning, digital dentistry, and specialized dental care are integrated into daily clinical workflows. Exploring Digital Dentistry and Prosthodontic Workflows As part of their visit, the students toured the Digital Dentistry and Prosthodontics Laboratory, where they were introduced to the role of digital technologies in contemporary dental practice. Guided by Minh, Sarah, and Jaimie Mas, the students gained insight into the laboratory environment and the processes that support modern prosthodontic care. The visit highlighted how digital dentistry can contribute to greater efficiency, accuracy, and integration between clinical assessment and laboratory procedures. Exposure to these technologies allowed the students to connect their academic knowledge with practical applications and observe how digital workflows are incorporated into advanced dental education and clinical practice. Understanding Comprehensive Diagnosis and Clinical Assessment The students also visited the Student Clinic, where Dr. Keith and Dr. Taiseer Sulaiman introduced them to approaches used in comprehensive diagnosis and clinical assessment. The experience provided valuable insight into the importance of systematically evaluating patients before developing an appropriate treatment plan. By observing the clinical environment, students were able to better understand how patient information, clinical findings, and diagnostic considerations contribute to informed decision-making in dentistry. This exposure is particularly valuable for senior students and interns as they transition from academic learning toward greater responsibility in professional clinical settings. Insight into Oral Surgery Clinical Practice The international experience also included a visit to the Oral Surgery Clinic, where students explored the clinical environment and observed the workflow of a specialized oral surgery setting. With guidance from Dr. Reside and Milan, Clinical Scribe for the Oral Surgery Clinic, students gained a closer look at how clinical teams coordinate patient care and manage documentation and workflow within a specialized dental clinic. The visit helped students appreciate the importance of multidisciplinary coordination, structured clinical processes, and effective communication in delivering safe and efficient patient care. Connecting Academic Learning with Global Dental Practice Beyond observing clinical facilities, the two-week experience provided FODM students with an opportunity to compare academic and clinical practices across different educational environments. International clinical exposure can play an important role in preparing dental students for an increasingly global profession. By observing different approaches to clinical assessment, digital dentistry, prosthodontics, and oral surgery, students can develop a broader professional perspective and strengthen their understanding of contemporary dental practice. The experience at UNC-Chapel Hill therefore complemented the students’ academic and clinical education at Future University in Egypt, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world clinical environments and international standards of practice. Preparing Future Dental Professionals For senior dental students and interns, experiences such as this provide more than an opportunity to visit an international institution. They create a valuable bridge between academic education, clinical observation, and professional development. Through its international academic collaborations and student opportunities, the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine at Future University in Egypt remains committed to providing students with experiences that broaden their clinical perspective, encourage continuous learning, and prepare them to contribute confidently to the future of dentistry. The UNC-Chapel Hill shadowing experience reflects FUE’s commitment to global exposure, practical learning, and the development of highly prepared dental professionals equipped to engage with evolving practices in modern dentistry.
